Rabbi Wernick participates in a press conference with Pastor Corey Brooks about “Walk Across America to End Violence.”

USCJ has created “Operation Tent of Abraham and Sarah,” an initiative to support Pastor Corey Brooks and the Walk Across America to End Violence by offering hospitality and a pulpit from which to preach as he makes his way across the country.

USCJ is encouraging Conservative Jews to join the march, including teens from the USY on Wheels summer program.

As news of the private proceedings of our closed door meeting was leaked to the press and beyond, we are sure that many of you are aware of the difficult step our budget committee has taken to recommend our successful Koach program be put on hiatus – summer break, if you will – to consider a more sustainable way of funding it.

As you can imagine, the process of preparing a budget is daunting. How does an organization meet its strategic priorities in a circumstance of limited resources? Difficult choices – between positive values and programs – have to be made. In the interim, the leak of our budget discussions has generated much discussion, and possibly some opportunity. These conversations will continue at our committee and board levels and will be shared when appropriate.

Group of rabbis who attended the meeting at the White House

A group of rabbis and leaders from the Conservative movement met with President Barack Obama and his Chief of Staff Jack Lew (who happens to be a Orthodox Jew) in the White House on Tuesday, May 29th.

USCJ CEO Rabbi Wernick called the meeting “warm and productive.”

Rabbi Julie Schonfeld, executive vice president of the Rabbinical Assembly, said “He especially encouraged us to carry forward Judaism’s message of communal responsibility and the religious mandate to seek the welfare of all people in society.”

An official press release said that the president thanked the rabbis and lay leaders for the work they do in communities around the country and “reiterated his unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security.”

Thursday evening there was a devastating fire at the Knesset Israel parsonage. Rabbi David Weiner, Judith, Joe, Ari, and Shira all got out of the house safely.

However, the house sustained a great deal of damage and nearly all of the contents were destroyed.

We are setting up an emergency fund to help purchase the immediate essentials such as clothing, toys, books, etc.
